DOKU vs Midtrans vs WinPay: Choosing a Payment Gateway for Your Business
A comparison of merchant fees, integration ease, and settlement from the perspective of a developer who has implemented all three in client apps and websites.
The question that almost always comes up at the start of an app or online store project: "which payment gateway?". The honest answer: it depends on your business model. I have implemented all three in client projects — here's the comparison from a practical standpoint, not a brochure.
What's being compared
Three things that most influence the decision: cost per transaction, ease of integration, and settlement speed to your bank account.
DOKU
DOKU is strong in the enterprise segment and has the most complete range of payment methods — credit cards, virtual accounts, e-wallets, and even QRIS. Its API documentation is clean and its merchant console is informative.
- Best for: businesses with large volumes or a need for a full range of payment methods
- Watch out for: the merchant registration process demands more complete documentation
Midtrans
Midtrans (by GoTo) is very popular among startups. Its sandbox is pleasant to work with during development, plugins for WooCommerce and other popular platforms are widely available, and Snap (the checkout popup) drastically speeds up integration.
- Best for: startups and online stores that want to go live quickly
- Watch out for: fees differ per method — recalculate your margins per channel
WinPay
WinPay stands out for its easy onboarding for SMEs and competitive fees. Its API integration is straightforward, and for simple cases like QRIS payments in a POS app, setup is quick.
- Best for: SMEs and apps with focused payment needs
- Watch out for: a narrower range of methods compared to DOKU
How to choose
- Calculate the effective cost per channel that your customers use the most — usually QRIS and virtual accounts.
- Check settlement speed — funds arriving at H+1 or H+2 affect your cash flow.
- Test the sandbox before deciding — a smooth integration experience saves development time.
Integration notes from the developer's side
Whichever you choose, prepare three things from the start: an idempotent webhook endpoint (notifications can arrive twice), automated daily reconciliation (compare the gateway's reports with your internal records), and a sandbox mode that is truly separated from production. These three are what keep payments from becoming a source of drama later on.
