Core Web Vitals: 7 Quick Fixes for WordPress Websites

From image optimization to caching layers — high-impact fixes you can complete in a single afternoon.

Core Web Vitals are now part of Google's ranking signals — and more importantly, they directly affect your visitors' experience. The good news: most slow WordPress websites can be fixed with seven steps that can be completed in a single afternoon.

1. Compress and convert images to WebP

Images are the biggest contributor to page weight. Convert to WebP (usually 30–50% smaller than JPEG), and make sure the file size matches the display size — don't serve a 2000px image for a 400px column.

2. Set explicit width and height

Without dimensions, the browser doesn't know how much space an image needs before it loads — the layout "jumps" when the image appears. That's poor CLS. Add the width and height attributes to every <img>.

3. Lazy-load below-the-fold images

Use loading="lazy" on images that aren't visible in the first viewport. Don't lazy-load the hero image — that actually delays LCP.

4. Enable page caching

Every visit that doesn't touch PHP is a win. Use a caching plugin or server-level caching (FastCGI cache) — pick one, don't stack them.

5. Trim your plugins

Every active plugin brings its own CSS/JS. Deactivate the ones you don't use, and replace heavy plugins with lightweight solutions when the functionality is simple.

6. Defer non-critical JavaScript

Analytics scripts, chat widgets, and third-party embeds should be deferred or loaded after the first interaction. Test with the Network tab in DevTools — what's blocking render?

7. Update PHP and remove unused default themes

The latest PHP version isn't just about security — its performance is also better. Unused default themes should be deleted, not just deactivated.

Measure before and after

Don't guess. Run PageSpeed Insights before you start, note the numbers, make the fixes, then measure again. Focus on LCP and CLS first — the two metrics visitors feel the most.

Layered caching optimization is at the core of my WordPress multi-site case study — three sites, one dashboard, much faster loading.
