Why Flutter Is the Right Choice for Indonesian Startup MVPs
One codebase for Android and iOS, fast development, and a mature ecosystem. The reasons I recommend Flutter for nearly every MVP I work on.
Every time a startup client comes to me with an app idea and a limited budget, the first question I ask is not "native or hybrid?" — but rather "how quickly do you need market validation?". For the majority of cases in Indonesia, the answer makes Flutter the most rational choice.
1. One Codebase, Two Platforms
With Flutter, one small team — even a single person — can release Android and iOS apps simultaneously. There's no duplication of business logic, no feature synchronization across two codebases, and bug fixes only need to be done once.
- Average development time is 30–40% shorter compared to building two native apps
- Consistent UI across both platforms thanks to the same rendering engine
- Hot reload speeds up design iteration from minutes to seconds
For an MVP, the speed of learning from the market matters more than technical perfection. Flutter gives you both with the smallest possible compromise.
2. A Mature Ecosystem for Local Needs
Integrations with local payment gateways like DOKU, WinPay, and Midtrans have active community plugins. Push notifications, offline storage, and map integrations are also mature. This means the features most commonly needed by Indonesian businesses are already available without building from scratch.
I used the same approach in CHAS — a heavy equipment transportation app: Android and iOS were released from a single Flutter codebase, complete with GPS attendance and photo/video documentation.
When Is Flutter Not the Right Choice?
If your app relies heavily on platform-specific hardware features, needs extreme graphics performance, or targets only one platform — native might make more sense. I'm always honest about this from the very first consultation session.
